Jorge’s journey into pottery has evolved over time. Initially, he experimented various techniques like coiling, pinching, and slab work. Now, his focus has shifted towards the wheel. He begins by throwing on the wheel, then transform the pieces through twisting, carving, adding unique textures, or attaching hand-built slab pieces to imbue them with distinct personalities.
To him, pottery is akin to infusing life and soul into the clay. The clay becomes a companion, a partner. As he shapes the clay, he feels its response, and in this intimate interaction, the clay and him co-create narratives of beauty. His creations are a reflection of himself, deeply inspired by nature. He aspires for my audience to sense the vibrancy, vitality and movement of nature through my work.
A little more about Jorge Amado. A philanthropist born into a Spanish-Guatemalan immigrant family in Mexico.
Growing up, he had the privilege of experiencing diverse geographies, cultures and its people in Mexico, Germany, Israel, Guatemala, and the United States. This rich tapestry naturally fueled his passion for understanding people, cherishing moments with loved ones, and using his skills to help others.
His early career was dedicated to practicing clinical psychology, and later, I relocated to California, working as a clinical counselor and social worker within the foster care system. Looking for new horizons, He also ventured into the carpet cleaning business. Then, fifteen years ago, he started doing ceramics and what began as a hobby in his home pottery studio blossomed into a fervent passion. He enrolled in ceramic classes, eventually establishing his own pottery studio.
Along the way, he started teaching ceramics to a diverse range of students, from children to the elderly, hobbyists to aspiring potters. Subsequently, he moved to New England, continuing my journey as a potter, crafting pieces for farmer’s markets and art festivals, and as educator, imparting my knowledge to eager students.
Throughout his life, his passion has been to utilize my knowledge as a vessel to share meaningful experiences with others and to extend a helping hand to those in need.
